Positive Youth Development
Positive Youth Development (PYD) is an approach toward all youth that builds on their assets and their potential and helps counter the problems that may affect them. Growing up can be tough, but young people are more likely to succeed if they are active participants in decision-making that affects their lives and their communities. PYD has many variations, but they all promote the idea that helping young people achieve their full potential is the best way to help them avoid risky behaviors. This is best accomplished in a holistic way that is culturally sensitive and that incorporates the different aspects of their lives (family, school, peers, recreation, faith, community, and work). Youth development programs typically work through existing organizations, such as 4-H, Boys & Girls Clubs, and other youth serving programs. The following articles provide more detailed information about PYD.
