Alabama is currently administering a pilot stroke system in the Southeast Region which will help save lives and reduce the burden of stroke. This system will improve a stroke patientís chances of survival, regardless of proximity to an urban stroke center. The stroke system is voluntary and all hospitals in the Southeast Region are encouraged to participate. The Southeast Regional Pilot Acute Stroke System (SRPASS) includes Autauga, Barbour, Bullock, Butler, Coffee, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Elmore, Geneva, Henry, Houston, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Montgomery, Pike, and Russell Counties. Participating hospitals will be designated as either a Primary Stroke Hospital or Stroke Ready Hospital depending on the availability of resources and services. Each hospital will be inspected to verify that they can provide the level of care for which they have applied.
How the SRPASS Works
The SRPASS will rely on the Alabama Trauma Communications Center (ATCC) for coordination of patient transport to the appropriate stroke hospital. The ATCC will also facilitate transfer of patients that must be stabilized locally before transfer for definitive care. This will be accomplished with a computer system network and 24/7 staff that will maintain up-to-the-minute status on all stroke hospitals and resources. This system will be monitored by a quality improvement process to resolve problems as needed and to ensure a high level of care.
