Productive Quarterly Meeting Paves Way for Future Coalition Activities, McClellan Presents on Cancer Stem Cells
The Alabama Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition (ACCCC) recently met for its July Quarterly Meeting at the American Cancer Society (ACS) offices in Birmingham. The meeting proved to be very successful with the recently reformed committees mapping out annual objectives and activities.
Each committee - Prevention, Early Detection, Survivorship, Access to Care, Surveillance and Communications - identified long-term objectives as stated in the ACCCC's statewide cancer control plan " The Path to Cancer Control in Alabama" as well as annual objectives to be met by the July 2014 meeting. Committees also agreed on activities to be completed in the coming months that will work to achieve these objectives.
After a brief lunch, Steve McClellan of the University of South Alabama Mitchell Cancer Institute (MCI) spoke to Coalition members about his research at MCI on cancer stem cells.
Next was Teri Hoenemeyer of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center who spoke on UAB's oncology education and supportive services.
Sarah Grogan then spoke on Susan G. Komen for the Cure's recent and upcoming activities and efforts.
Finally, Katherine Molnar representing ACS had some ACS Cancer Action Network announcements for the Coalition.
The ACCCC will meet for its next quarterly meeting in October where committees will report on the progress of the activities decided upon in this meeting.
