The Alabama Trauma Registry (ATR) is a system that supports the collection, storage, and subsequent analysis of trauma-related data on a statewide level. The Alabama Head and Spinal Cord Injury Registry (AHSCIR), Act 98-611, is a law that requires Alabama hospitals to submit data related specifically to head and/or spinal cord injury patients. Data submitted by hospitals is entered into a centralized database at the ADPH Office of EMS and Trauma. The information gained from this data will serve two general purposes:
- To expedite and help secure resource availability to trauma patients, especially those who have received debilitating injuries. This is done by linking patients with rehabilitation services.
- To improve on the current trauma system through data research and analysis.
More specifically, the second purpose is aimed at generating information related to external causes, injury severity, utilization/performance of protective equipment, treatment modalities and outcomes research. These data will further provide statewide information on the magnitude of traffic-related injuries and illustrate disparities among different segments of Alabama’s population. Pilot testing and initial data collection from trauma centers began in fiscal year 2000.
Data entry warnings and information will be posted soon.
